Goal Getter’s Guide to Crushing It in 2024

As we roll into the end of the year, it's that time again to jot down our 2024 game plan, both personally and professionally. For me, this process is all about feeling empowered, motivated, and ready to conquer. Picture this: a cozy quiet room with a whiteboard, colorful dry erase markers, new journal, big sticky pads on an easel, a Venti espresso, and a killer podcast. That's the sweet spot!

However, after doing this routine since 2004, I've stumbled into some common traps that can throw a wrench into our goal-setting groove. So, here are the top five pitfalls I've encountered and some tricks to bounce back if you find yourself in the same boat.

Ditch the Unrealistic Goals

One big goof we often make is setting goals that are way too ambitious. Sure, it's awesome to aim high, but going overboard can lead to frustration. Instead, focus on SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Need a reality check? Run your goals by trusted colleagues or friends for some candid feedback.

Not Everything is a Priority

Juggling too many goals at once? Been there. Trying to lose weight, snag a certification, double your income, and become a master chef, all in one go? It's a recipe for burnout. Prioritize based on what truly matters. Establishing a personal and professional vision can help align your goals with what really counts. More on that below.

Don't Lose Track of Your Goals

Goal-setting isn't a one-and-done deal. Don't be the person fishing for a sticky note with your goals from January 1, 2023 lodged away in a cluttered desk drawer.  Regularly check in on your goals and tweak them as needed. Schedule regular catch-ups with a buddy, colleague, or coach to keep you on track and make adjustments on the fly.

Skip the Lofty Aspirations — Go for Actual Goals

Dreaming big is fantastic, but setting enormous, intimidating goals without a clear plan? Not so much. Break down those grand objectives into bite-sized, achievable tasks. Make it measurable and realistic. That way, you'll not only have a roadmap but also get to celebrate those small victories along the way.

Balancing Busy with Personal Development

It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget about personal growth. But here's the deal: personal development often fuels professional success. Schedule time for it—before your calendar fills up with other busyness. Get a colleague on board for accountability, and investing in an event or workshop could be the push you need to show up.

Here's to a 2024 filled with goals that are not just set but conquered! 🚀

Change is good. And it is even better to do it together.
